Lust & Love: Paint Show by Jamie Morrison

Lust & Love offers a nihilistic answer to the question. Morrison’s large-scale paintings depict looming, goddess-like figures that merge the imagery of ancient Greek mythology with the visual language of 1970s magazine centerfolds. Their dead-eyed stares confront the viewer, turning the gaze back onto the audience and asking us to consider the consequences of what we have created.
Set against heavy fields of dark, neutral tones, the paintings create an atmosphere of impending doom. Text woven throughout the series points toward a range of contemporary issues that Morrison suggests have contributed to the suffering of these celestial matriarchs, from environmental destruction to the systems and attitudes that have enabled it.
The series also turns the traditional male gaze back onto the viewer. Rather than existing as passive objects, Morrison’s figures stare directly outward, confronting the audience and holding a mirror back to humanity.
Recurring imagery of motorcycles, fruit, and flowers creates a visual tension between industry and nature, machinery and organic life. Fuel-guzzling machines sit alongside symbols of growth and abundance, while figures perched atop motorcycles appear caught between resignation and retaliation.
